It started with a simple idea: take 12V from a gigantic lithium battery, boost it to 48V and power a boat trolling motor. The only small problem was that the converter had to handle up to 200 amps. So I ended up designing a six-phase interleaved DC-DC boost converter with custom aluminum PCBs, massive copper busbars and a chunky aluminum enclosure. Somewhere along the way, the $1,000 project turned into warped PCBs, questionable engineering decisions, a lot of soldering and moving hundreds of components from one board to another. But, eventually, everything came together and started looking suspiciously like an actual power converter. Whether it works is another question.
