These ICs are popular because they perform some of the most common functions required in electronic circuits. They are widely used for timing, amplification, voltage regulation, counting, switching, driving loads and electrical isolation. Many are inexpensive, easy to use and excellent for learning and practical projects.
1. NE555 — A popular timer IC used for delays, pulse generation and oscillators. It can operate in monostable or astable mode.
2. LM358 — A dual operational amplifier containing two independent op-amps. Commonly used for amplification, filtering and sensor signal conditioning.
3. LM741 — A classic general-purpose operational amplifier. Mainly used for learning and traditional analog circuits, typically with dual power supplies.
4. LM7805 — A fixed linear voltage regulator that provides a regulated 5 V output. Common in simple low-power supply circuits.
5. LM317 — An adjustable linear voltage regulator. Its output voltage is normally set using an external resistor network.
6. CD4017 — A decade counter with 10 decoded outputs. Each clock pulse advances the active output from Q0 through Q9.
7. 74HC595 — An 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register with an output storage register. It is widely used to expand microcontroller outputs.
8. ULN2003A — Contains seven NPN Darlington driver channels. It is commonly used to drive relays, motors, lamps and other loads.
9. PC817 — An optocoupler containing an LED and phototransistor. It transfers signals while providing electrical isolation between circuits.
10. LM393 — A dual voltage comparator with open-collector outputs. It is commonly used for threshold detection, level sensing and waveform shaping.
