Radio Frequency is the closest approximation to black magic that electronics engineering has to offer. A Smith Chart is a standard trick in an RF magician’s toolbox. It’s a circular map that lets you visualize and match complex RF impedances at a glance. The centerline spans from short to system impedance, usually 50 Ohms, to open and anything in between. Anything above that line is inductive in nature, while capacitive impedances appear below. The real beauty is being able to clearly visualize a circuit’s complex impedance as a function of frequency. This makes analyzing and designing RF circuits much more intuitive, even for complex networks. With a little practice, the Smith Chart can quickly become an indispensable tool in your RF toolkit.
