RF Magic: 3.8 GHz Voltage-Controlled Oscillator #electronics #physics

This video takes a quick look at a 3.8 GHz voltage-controlled oscillator from the era when HP was producing some of its most interesting RF hardware. Powered from a ±10 V split supply, the module delivers around 20 mW of RF output and features an unusually sensitive tuning port. Even light contact with the control input and a supply rail is enough to shift the oscillator’s frequency, revealing how responsive the internal control circuitry is.

To highlight its speed, the oscillator is driven with a 1 kHz modulation signal, clearly showing that the tuning bandwidth is more than sufficient for FM or FSK applications. It’s a compact example of classic high-frequency design and a reminder of how capable these vintage modules can be.
