Why would an engineer deliberately make a PCB trace longer?

On high-speed circuits, related signals need to arrive within very tight timing windows. If one trace is too short, its signal can arrive earlier than the others. Serpentine routing adds the extra distance needed to control that timing, a technique called length matching.
